When you then arrive or briefly air the rooms, warm, humid air meets ice-cold exterior walls. That is exactly where condensation settles – invisible at first, in the coolest corners and behind the furniture. Warm indoor air can carry a great deal of water vapour. When it meets cold wall surfaces it cools down and releases the water as a fine film – the breeding ground for mould spores forms precisely in these cool zones.
If the house stands empty or is barely aired, the moisture builds up. Without an exchange of air, the water stays in the wall and the room – a common problem in rarely used second homes.
Window lintels, concrete pillars or uninsulated corners are noticeably colder than the rest of the wall. At these thermal bridges, a particularly large amount of moisture condenses – this is almost always where the mould begins.
Leaking joints, cracks in the render or rising ground moisture allow water to penetrate from outside. Here a coating alone is not enough – the source has to be stopped structurally.
